in 2008 a patient here reported,"I recently had the Profractional Laser Treatment done (about six weeks ago). I have had two treatments to date. Not only was the treatment horrifically painful, but after the money was spent, my skin looks worse than to begin with.
I now have several small permanent pinhole sized scars - these aren't just the "grid" hanging around, they are actual scars. Also I have never had broken capillaries on my face before, but now I do have several on my cheeks and on my nose. One more thing - the treatment was done in my under-eye area as well... Immediately after, I had a large amount of swelling and bruising. Now, my crows feet are far worse than I have ever seen them. I literally look at least 5-10 years older in my eyes. I've had friends make several comments.
I am no stranger to skin treatments, and this, I would NEVER NEVER do again. I am now going to have to make serious efforts to correct the damage that this proceedure has done.

Better ablation through more efficient water absorption

ProFractional utilizes an erbium:YAG laser, which was chosen due to its high ablation efficiency. Erbium has a much higher absorption in the target chromophore water than CO2 (see graph below) which gives erbium the ability to vaporize tissue with very little thermal conduction. By contrast, due to their comparatively low absorption by water, CO2 lasers have lower ablation efficiency and therefore, unavoidably, conduct a significant amount of heat into the tissue. (less)
